Eight Predictions for MacWorld 2008

David Sieger gave the following predictions for MacWorld 2008. My comments follow inline.

  • Shuffle replacements - Needs to be true. Shuffles are being outrun by the competition. They also should have a very simple text-only UI by now
  • New iPods - Not entirely sure. It would be the second event in a row where Apple updates iPods. They might get some extra GBs of capacity but nothing more
  • Entry model iPhone - I really don’t get this one. What the heck is a entry model iPhone? An iPhone without a phone? Without WiFi/Safari, which is the beauty of it? I don’t buy on this one.
  • Mac sub-notebook - I’d put this on the top. Apple would earn a lot from having such a device because there’s a market for it and because it’s so necessarily cheap that it would attract customers that still think that Apple products are overpriced (they are but not as much as people claim);
  • Mac mini - Well, who knows. Might receive some hardware updates but nothing noteworthy or capable of boosting Apple shares (or profit)
  • A new WIFI connected portable device platform - What the heck is a “a new WiIFi connected portable device platform”?
  • Displays - meh. Not relevant too as this is clearly the most overpriced Apple product ever;
  • Expanded ITMS video downloads - Not big or relevant. Meh again

I don’t think there will be some huge revelations and unless Steve pops a rabbit from his hat Apple shares will go down right after MacWorld 2008 on the short-term. On the long term, if 2007Q4 shows again a growth than it will drop the P/E and therefore make room for the shares to rise.
