Leopard & Ubuntu 7.10 - Almost one month of usage

Well, Leopard has been working flawlessly. ‘Nuff said. Flawlessly. I’m not trying to say that Leopard doesn’t have problems, it has and they’re already listed throughout the tech media and on Apple’s website, but I haven’t been through any of them. It’s faster than Tiger, Spotlight is stupidly fast and it has some very interesting small features that I do like — the most noticeable one for me being that connecting to SMB shares is as fast as on Windows [1].

As for Ubuntu 7.10, it’s definitely a huge improvement since the time I used it on my laptop (as I’ve mentioned in the past, I gave up on using Linux on laptops). I’m not entirely sure if it’s really prepared for the laptop, but it’s definitely a very good and stable experience on the desktop.

As a side note, my thoughts on the usage of Windows Vista: it does well on a fast machine (my iMac Core 2 Duo for instance) but it has some quirks. I find it to be not very intuitive in what regards to customization and changing settings and for some odd reason Live Messenger does not work at all, even with the firewall turned off. I can’t even install the latest version 8.5! Also, games (for instance Unreal Tournament 3) are faster on Windows XP than on Windows Vista. So, if you have a powerful machine and free (as in, not illegal) access to a copy of Windows Vista, you might as well install it. Otherwise, it’s not worth the price Microsoft is asking for it.

[1] - For those who don’t recall, SMB is a protocol designed by Microsoft and kept closed, so most of the work was actually done by reverse engineering a lot of dumps from tcpdump. That explains why accessing SMB shares on Windows has been faster than on any other operating systems.

Leopard works “flawlessly” while Vista “has some quirks”? Come on, guys - I like to bash MS just as much as the next guy, but quit with the biased posts already! Leopard makes Mac users see BSODs (and also other “quirks”) and you fanboys are still in denial. Apple dropped the ball - accept it and move on. Geez

Bruno Antunes, please re-read the post as you 1) have problems interpreting what’s written or 2) intentionally misinterpreted what was said.

I said it *FOR ME* it has been working flawlessly, although problems do exist with *OTHERS*. Also, *I* have been having problems with Vista. Among others, Live Messenger does not work and I find it to lack a lot on the user experience side — plus being terribly slow on moderately old machines (< P4 2Ghz).

Of course, your mileage may vary, and that’s my own personal experience of one month using Leopard.
