What really upsets me about Digg
- Published October 17th, 2007 in Tech Comment
Digg has become the Slashdot of the Web 2.0. It has a very unique community and its own idiosyncrasies and it’s kind of expectable the kind of news that will be dugg up.
There are some things though that seriously annoy me. Here’s a brief list:
- Every single time someone talks about an American political issue, someone shows up shouting “RON PAUL, RON PAUL”. Please, we’re darn sick of seeing the appeal for a vote on Ron Paul and we also know the neo-liberal he is so please stop with it!
- American people submitting posts to Digg simply assume the World turns around America; I mean, Digg, AFAIK, it’s a worldwide website and although it’s headquartered in New York City, USA, it’s used by people from all over the world. So, next time you refer to the President Elections, do us a favor and add USA to the title. Something like “USA President Elections”. Appreciated.
- On a more technical discussion, the comments always slip to irrelevant and off topic discussions; If people are citing some new Leopard features, some trolls show up and say that Windows XP/Vista/whatever already had them. Besides being blatantly false, they are annoying; Same applies to political posts. If someone is talking about how idiot Giuliani is, please DON’T JUMP IN SCREAMING FOR RON PAUL!
- I’m an Apple fan myself, but Digg has definitely way to many loud Apple fans;
- Most of the comments, even those that are positively moderated, are crap. Most of the comments lack any technical knowledge (where it applies).
Except for this, I visit it daily and I like Digg.

Mário, that’s pretty much why I went the extra mile and compiled myself a direct-link feed. I read the summary, go straight to the website in question. If I’m interested in what the community has to say, I’ll pay a quick visit.
(for the feed, click my name. didn’t want to spam my posting the link in the comment)
Funny how each website has earned a stereotypical crowd. Slashdot, knowledgeable people. Digg, curious but gullible and at times, immature. Youtube, spammers and uninteresting people.
Do you feel that as well?
Yeah André, absolutely. I subscribe you. Everytime I want to read some insightful comments I just resort to Osnews or Slashdot. Obviously, a lot of inaccuracy can still be found on any of these two websites, but definitely way less compared to Digg.
I’m with you on this one. I don’t subscribe to the feeds, there’s just too much crap, I just pay an occasional visit to see if there’s something interesting.
I think the Digg headquarters are in SF and not NYC.
I also find programming.reddit.com a good place, with a lot of good comments. And yes, /. is great.
