My rental agreement

Take a look at an excerpt of my rental agreement:
Landlord does not have any obligation and does not provide insurance of any kind to protect Resident against any personal injury or property damage including, but not limited to, that caused by act or omission of any other resident or third party, or by any criminal act or activity, war, riot, insurrection, fire or Act of God.
Ok, although I do believe in God, this is just unbelievable. Except for the fact that this an American rental agreement. That explains a lot.

Sad as it may seems “Act of God” has a legal validity in US. You can see more in here: That detail alone (meaning any natural cause — flood, lightning — is not covered by insurance) doomed most of Katrina’s victims in New Orleans area (normally “Act of God” must be covered on the side). A big ugly irony.
Different, but eventually also an act of god (whom ever that may be…):
Three days ago the Supreme Court of US decided to “allow more federal money to flow to church groups and religious organizations that do charitable work or provide social services”. A big win to Bush Administration, this is a clear violation of state / church separation. (Guess who will be the groups getting this money?)
Did you know that in a liberal state like Oregon, during the last mass before Presidential election there were priests (catholics) saying that voting for Kerry was a sin?! Amazing.
Talking about the basic elements of democracy that *clearly* are lacking in US nowadays.
There is actually a very funny movie called “The man who sued God” because of this. Basically we looses his boat because it was struck by lightning. Insurance company did not want to pay “Act of God.” so if God destroyed his boat e sued the major big churches as representatives.

On the fictional world created around the new NIN album (which I talked about on my blog), set 15 years in the future where the USA was ruled by a right wing government where church and corporate leaders took part something similar was described, but it was a bit worse: diseases caused by pollution:

Looks like that world was not so far from reality.
Well, Republicans are usually associated with the Christians which is definitely a bad thing. Religion should not have political bounds or influence voter’s decision. Unfortunately, a lot of Americans still vote based on what the local priests say them to do. It’s the bad part of religion. Fortunately, I still do believe they do more good than bad although most of the atheists only prefer to talk about the bad things.
