WWDC 07: Leopard new features
- Published June 11th, 2007 in Apple
It’s getting more and more exciting:
- New desktop; [Figure 1, 2]
- New dock with folders and stacks [Figure 3]
- New finder (finally!) [Figure 4]
- Quick Look - Live file previews (it was about time! Kudos to Gnome for turning this into mainstream). But this one is actually more powerful since you can zoom it by hitting the space bar.
- 100% 64 bits, including all FreeBSD user land. [Way to go! Let’s get rid of 32bits CPUs once and for all. This will be great for serious RAW photo shooters and for handling photos over 2GB.]
- Core animation
- Boot camp [built-in] that can be used in complement to Parallels & VMWare (you can boot it or use the virtualizer to load Windows) [Figure 5]
- Spaces - multiple desktops. Feature borrowed from the Linux desktop environment but looking better. [Figure 6]
- Dashboard [More widgets and using safari to make widgets from web pages — instantly, no coding required! Like Dilbert? Make a widget with the daily cartoon]
- iChat [Figure 7]
- Time machine - Sun ZFS! Way to go.
And that’s it for Leopard. I was not expecting anything more than this. It looks great and it will probably run as fast as Tiger which is great (compared to other operating systems that require 2 to 4 times more RAM, CPU and GPU just to run! — People don’t buy this anymore).
