Portugal got in the news!

I was astonished when I found out that Portugal made news today in the IT tech world. And for a good reason! Critical Software, the software company based in Coimbra (Portugal) but with offices in San Jose and in London, has recently launched a gateway package that sits upon GNU/Linux and includes 50 Free/Open Source packages.

edgeBOX 4.0 includes QoS, the LAMP framework, VoIP, VPN and even IP-Telephony services amongst several other things.

Congratulations, that’s the way to go!

I’ve been saying this ever since I worked for Critical, it’s an awesome company with awesome management people.

Unfortunately, everyone else prefers to bitch around, saying they don’t pay enough. IMO, that’s stupid, they pay you exactly what everyone else pays, it’s only a matter of getting a good deal. And besides, the experience itself is definately worth it, but today’s graduates don’t think that way. They have a degree, they deserve higher pay even though they know less than they think they do.

    Hurray for Critical.

    Celso,

That’s a very good point. I’m on the 4th year of my Computer Sciense degree so I won’t serve as apprentice until the next year. But I’ve heard several comments from people finishing their degree this year, stating that they refused Critical Software due to their low wages.

This has been a recurrent problem. And students tend to go to other companies like Indra or CPC. Somehow I understand them: moving to Coimbra and renting a house is expensive.

As for me, I’m somewhat clueless. Maybe I’ll answer to a IBM headhunter. Working as a free lancer for a consultory firm would also be a nice experience: Accenture, Delloite or even IBM would stand as great opportunities. But, you know, it’s hard to establish a life when you’re always flying around. A tradeoff therefore.
