Rhythmbox 0.9.2 deb for Ubuntu Breezy

Rhythmbox is a music player directed for the GNOME environment that mimics iTunes look. But it goes further on. Version 0.9.2 provides access to the iTunes DAAP protocol so users can access remote shared playlists. It also allows you to share yours!

The version of Rhythmbox bundled in Ubuntu Breezy is outdated (0.9.0) and does not include DAAP support. Someone backported version 0.9.1 from Dapper (Ubuntu’s next codename version, corresponding to 6.10) but it did not include DAAP support (this support demands a --enable-daap at compile time).

Having said that, I’ve compiled myself Rhythmbox 0.9.2 for Ubuntu Breezy. It’s my Christmas gift :-) You can install this package by doing dpkg -i rhythmbox_0.9.2-0_i386.deb

Remember that if you want DAAP support enabled, you have to install avahi. Do the following: apt-get install libavahi-glib0 libavahi-client1 avahi-utils

I’ve tested this build against iTunes on Mac OS X. It detected it as soon as I started Rhythmbox and I’m listening through it on this very precise moment :-)

Well, i honestly don’t care much about DAAP support, but there are some more things i’d like on Rhythmbox, so i believe it’s not ready for me. Actually, my first post in my recently created blog was about it.

Anyway, i’m gonna try out your .deb :) And thanks.

    Hi
First, thanks for your work !

I have installed this pacakge and I’m trying to use daap but can’t manage to.
I have installed the pacakges you’re talking about and I’m using daapd on a sid.
Do you have any idea why it doesn’t work ?

Well, I must confess I’ve only tested it with iTunes DAAP server (connect from GNU/Linux to Mac OS X).

Maybe the problem is the daap daemon. I didn’t know there existed one, so I’ll investigate further on the subject to see if I find something relevant!

I am running mt-daapd on this ubuntu breezy box, along with avahi and Rhythmbox 0.9.2 (Thanks Mario!) It all works wonderfully together.

Didn’t work for me. The first couple times it complained about libavahi-client and libavahi-glib, so I installed those. Now it starts up, then immediately segfaults with no additional info. Hrrm.

Could you please specify your system specs? You have to install the following libraries libavahi-glib0 libavahi-client1 avahi-utils

This was built exclusively for Breezy, so it won’t work on Hoary. Dapper already has Rhythmbox 0.9.2 as default but I believe it is not compiled with the --enable-daap flag.

I had been searching for something like this for a few weeks and thank you for making the deb of RB 0.9.2 available. While it works fine, and I can happily share the music library sitting on my Mac in the other room, for some reason the main menu bar of RB has disappeared completely in this version! I removed and re-installed RB 0.9.1 just to check, and the menu bar returned. Is this a bug or something wrong with my installation?

Hmm… for some reason your blog did not register that I am also an Ubuntu Breezy user, but just said I am running Linux. Is it Firefox 1.5 that causes this lack of recognition of Ubuntu? ;)

    Dear Shekar,

If you’re talking about the toolbar that has the player controls (play, rewind, forward) and the song name, then it’s showing up correctly in here. At least, I didn’t have any problem concerning that.

Could you please give me further info about your machine?

As for the recognition, well, I’ve noticed that Linux shows up when I’m using Slackware independently of the browser I’m using. Ubuntu always showed up correctly, but I’ve recently updated Wordpress to version 2.0 so the plugin could be broken. I believe this comment will give an answer since it was published on Ubuntu Breezy/Firefox 1.0.7 :-)

I have the very same issue as Shekhar has. The menubar just isn’t there with your package. Strange, indeed.

Since the software didn’t catch it, I’m on Breezy of course :)
I will try to compile myself now, see if that’ll do it..

Well, I don’t know why, but Rhythmbox 0.9.2 certainly works when it’s homebrewed :)

Except for an annoying crash sometimes when adding podcasts, and for forgetting newly added podcasts sometimes.. :D

I also do not see a menu bar, as in file, edit.. and thoes tabs. Also i can no longer minimize rhymbox to the system bar, where the clock is. any ideas how to fix this.

The problem with the menu bar and system tray icon is most likely related to a problem with the file /usr/share/rhythmbox/rhythmbox-ui.xml, which controls both of these aspects of rhythmbox’s interface.

Try getting a fresh version of that file from a reputable source. If that fails you know that the packager fucked with the code before he built it, and one would have to wonder why…

These are the perils of using packages from shady characters on the internet who think they’re a package maintainer because they downloaded checkinstall.

    Steviant,

I am NOT a package maintainer and I never claimed so. I warned people to use the package at their very own risk. It worked for me: if it could work for anyone else around the globe, fine. Otherwise, fit yourself.

Seems that I did download checkinstall but you most definitely missed the package politeness. Your lack of respect is absolutely disgusting and it messes with the Free Software community. We don’t need people like you!

Just would like to point out that he actually helped with themproblem of getting a correct menubar. So in the spirit of flames it’s you kind ganging up not accepting help that makes the world a hard place to live in.

Ha ! ;-) thanks for the package, it works.. ;-)
