ATi X800 on Ubuntu Breezy

Note to all the people trying to install these: yes, it WORKS
I didn’t have so much fun since Redhat 5.1 where I would take at least 6 hours to figure out how to configure the graphics card.

Now that I’ve set up the hardware, I had to reinstall the system. I dropped SuSE in favour of Ubuntu so I had to reinstall it. As for Windows, it didn’t support the changes and keep on rebooting so I had to install it all over again (though the use I give it to him is pratically none, sometimes it maybe handy.. or not). Installing Windows took precisely 30 minutes plus 30 to install the motherboard and graphics drivers (and, of course, Firefox, since I refuse to use Internet Explorer).

As for Ubuntu, it took 20 minutes and it installed everything.. except the graphics card which is a Connect3D X800GTO (which can be changed to a X800XT, a much more expensive model. Further details and howto’s on the subject pretty soon). So I had the opportunity to revive those old times of $ startx and manually editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

But I was sort of dumb. I could take a moment to read and that would avoid wasting so much time. It’s a matter of installing the newest ATi’s [unfortunately] proprietary drivers and do some minor tweaking. Here’s a nice tutorial on the subject.

If you still didn’t manage to make it work, try running (worked for me)

$ dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I’ll eventually publish a page on the subject if the demand is high. Let me know if so.
